Antipodes Water has been consistently rated as one of the finest quality waters in the World and has been recognized as the purest source of water in New Zealand. Further enhancing Antipodes position of one of the world’s premium waters, New Zealand Natural Goods is very excited to announce Antipodes Water as the first premium water brand to be certified Carbon Neutral. The following document outlines this new positioning of the Antipodes Water Brand and explains the process required to achieve carbon neutral status.
Food Miles – “the distance traveled by any given product to reach the dinner table”
The “food miles movement” looks at the distance traveled by products and is used to promote the use of local and seasonal ingredients rather than imported ones. This movement has found strong support in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Germany and London. These advocates of the ‘food miles’ look at the amount of CO2 produced when freighting ingredients from places like NZ/Australia etc.
What some of these vocal supporters don’t take into account is that places like NZ have to be incredibly efficient when producing and shipping products for export if we are to survive in a global world, the best example of this is in France where a farmer will produce more CO2 in raising and preparing lamb for sale than a South Island farmer does to raise, prepare and ship the same product to France. The most efficient way to freight a product is via container ship while this takes longer it produces considerably less CO2.
Climate Change/Global Warming – “a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere.”
The excessive burning of fossil fuels over time for activities such as transport and electricity have resulted in unnaturally high concentrations of carbon being released into the atmosphere, in the form of CO2 emissions. The gas persists in the atmosphere, trapping warm air that should otherwise have dissipated out to space. This termed the “greenhouse effect” and is the cause of global warming/climate change.
Carbon Credits – “the process of balancing a defined unit of CO2 emissions with a product that saves or stores an equivalent amount of CO2”
A carbon offset or credit is an emission reduction credit from another organization’s project that results in less carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than would otherwise occur. Carbon offsets are typically measured in tons of CO2-equivalents (or ‘CO2e’) and are bought and sold through a number of international brokers, online retailers, and trading platforms. We choose to purchase our credits through the CarboNZero program.
How this affects Antipodes Water Company?
Antipodes has been working with the CarboNZero program over the past 6 months to measure the retrospective carbon footprint of Antipodes from April 06 – March 07 (note: all carbon measurement and mitigation are done in retrospect) the outcome was carbon footprint of 58.36 tons of CO2, effectively 120 grams (0.12kg) per bottle sold, this small amount actually takes into account freight within NZ and to export markets. To put it in perspective an average person in Auckland has a carbon footprint of approximately 8.11 tons of CO2.
Our aim for 2007/08 is to produce zero food miles (be carbon neutral) to any restaurant table or any household dining table anywhere in the world, in essence any bottle of water sold will cause no damage to the environment to reach your restaurant table, hotel room or home anywhere.
Carbon Neutral – “counter balancing your CO2 emissions with reductions or offsets elsewhere”
Becoming carbon neutral is an easy way to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions we create every we drive our cars, take a plane, or turn on our computers. It’s based on the principle that, since climate change is a global problem, an emission reduction made elsewhere has the same positive effect as on made locally. Here’s how it works: if you add polluting emission to the atmosphere, you can effectively subtract them by purchasing reductions achieved by projects elsewhere, such as wind farms, solar installations, or energy efficiency projects. By purchasing these credits, you can apply them to your own emissions and reduce your net climate impact.
Purchasing carbon offsets from projects as wind farms helps support the shift to renewable energy.
CarboNZero Program – “a way for NZ companies to mitigate the global warming effect of the burning of fossil fuels”
The carbonNZero program encourages and supports individuals and organization, to minimize their impacts on climate change by providing them with tools to measure, manange and mitigate their CO2 emissions. CarboNZero certification is only available for organizations that can demonstrate through third-party audit that they meet the strict criteria set by the program:
Measure – Calculate your CO2 emissions
Manage – Reduce emissions where possible
Mitigate – Offset emissions by purchasing carbon credits
Drink often. Drink chilled. Live well. And so will our planet.
